Phillis Wheatley was a slave in Boston. She wrote a poem about George Washington and he asked to meet her. Her master, John Wheatley freed her after his death and she she married and had children.
However many could not believe a slave could write poetry. Some publishers refused to publish her work, even after it was proven that she wrote it.
Her husband fell into debt and was put in jail. Phillis had to work as a maid and died at the age of 31.
