The ice box. An insulated chamber cooled by a block of ice harvested from lakes and streams and delivered to your home by the ice man. Before ice boxes farmers had a spring house where cold spring water flowed through a tub, keeping some items (butter, eggs) cool. Others had root cellars, just a big hole in the ground sometime they packed ice in saw dust to keep it cool in the warmer months. If they had a cave on their property it wasn't unusual for that to be used for cold storage, even to the point of keeping ice collected in the winter for summer use.
