In June of 1863, General Robert E. Lee's objective was the capital of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg. He would occupy the city. As part of this massive military operation, Lee planned on destroying the railroad bridge crossing the Susquehanna River, cutting off the rail connection between Washington DC and parts westward.On the evening of June 28, 1863, Lee understood that the Army of the Potomac had crossed the Potomac River. This forced Lee abandon his drive on Harrisburg and prepare to meet the threat on the Union's army.

This was a battle in Pennsylvania near Gettysburg on June 30, 1863. The results of the battle and inconclusive. It remains a point of interest, however, because Union cavalry forces under the command of Captain George A. Custer, delayed Confederate General JEB Stuart, from uniting with Robert E. Lee at Gettysburg. Custer, for his efforts was promoted to Brigadier General.
Meade's objective at Gettysburg was to defend Union territory and prevent General Robert E. Lee's Confederate Army from invading further into the North. Grant, on the other hand, was not present at the Battle of Gettysburg as he was in command of Union forces in the Western Theater at that time. However, Grant's overall objective throughout the war was to defeat the Confederacy and restore the Union.
In 1863, with the outcome of the Civil War very much undecided, Confederate General Robert E. Lee invaded Pennsylvania via the Shenandoah Valley. The goal of the campaign was to press northern senators into re-considering their stance on the war. Lee intended to press as far north as Harrisburg or Philadelphia in Pennsylvania. A northern Union army followed Lee's southern Confederate forces, and the two armies met at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on July 1st, 1863. The battle lasted two more days, and on July 4, Lee was forced to retreat back to his base of operations in Northern Virginia.

The Battle of Chancellorsville was a dramatic victory for the Confederacy. Against heavy odds, Confederate General Robert E. Lee beat Union General Joseph Hooker. The battle was in Virginia and ended on May 6, 1863. It paved the way for Lee's invasion raid on Pennsylvania late in June 1863.
In late June of 1863, President Lincoln became dissatisfied with General Hooker's plans to challenge General Robert E. Lee's advance into Pennsylvania. He relieved Hooker and took the advice of General in Chief Halleck's advice to replace Hooker with Major General George G. Meade. Meade had been a corps commander with the Army of the Potomac.
General Robert E. Lee would invade the Union state of Maryland in 1862 and Pennsylvania in 1863, but was driven out after the battles of Antietam and Gettysburg, respectively.
