They weren't much different than any other generation with the exception things had higher morals attached to them back then and sex was a 'hush' and not talked about as openly as now. Here are a few differences: * Teens went to school to learn and they had respect for their teachers and elders and if you crossed the line you got the strap in school and probably a good whack from your parents when you got home. You weren't allowed to date on a school night and if you were lucky enough your parents let you go out on a date on the weekend, but the male had to treat you like a lady and come to the door to pick you up and briefly meet your parents. * There were strict rules from most parents and it was generally 10 PM or 11 PM teens had to be home. * Whether you were male or female most parents refused to let their teens out unless they knew where they were going and loitering around street corners meant a breeding ground for trouble. * There were favorite drive in restaurants where the guys showed off their chopped coups (cars that the top was chopped and made lower), to big motors, painted designs of flames along the sides of the cars and lots of noise (the louder the better.) The guys cruised for girls and the girls pretended not to notice them, but hoped they would be one of the chosen ones to find a great guy in a souped up car. * Teens had crushes on teachers and other classmates. Generally when younger they picked crushes on Seniors. * Sex was a secret and boys would giggle and taunt each other about sex with their male friends, but never talked dirty to a girl. Girls were curious and would giggle and talk about 'cute guys' between girlfriends, but back then there was a higher percentage of girls being virgins because there was no Birth Control other than the condoms. It was highly frustrating for the girls and the guys. * If a girl got pregnant she generally became an embarrassment to her family and was suddenly sent off for a vacation at a relatives or, a home for unwed mothers. It was all hushed and most babies born were given up for adoption. Back then the girls didn't have a say as to whether they could keep their children although a low percentage did, but were ridiculed and ignored by society as a whole. * Drive-in Movies were called 'Passion Pits' or 'Baby makers' because things could get hot and heavy from the guy the girl was dating and the fight was on. He was on a 'go light' and she was on 'stop.' The term 'petting' was about the best the guy was going to get. That includes kissing, perhaps fondling of the breasts and anything below the belt on a girl was a ' no no.' Teen girls were terrified of becoming pregnant and they would rather lose a boyfriend than become pregnant. * Even in the 1950s there were 'those girls that did' and 'those that didn't' and the teen girls that came across sexually were used, abused and the very guy she had a sexual relationship with was the one the crowed the loudest to his buddies and she ended up with the bad reputations. The basic word back then for these girls was 'pig' (unfortunately.) * Broken hearts were just as heart breaking back then as now. * Teens didn't live together, but stayed home until they were no longer a minor which was 21 at the time (at least in Canada) or they graduated from high school and got a job and may move out if they showed responsibility. * There were 'sock hops' where teens went to dance, have fun and of course were always looking for that great guy or girl they would fall madly in love with. * It wasn't uncommon for males or females to marry right after high school graduation or in their very early 20s. These are a few things regarding dating during the 1950s. Living through those times was fantastic and it was still the days of innocence filled with hope and anticipation not only in finding that true love, but a free feeling that the world was your oyster. The long and short of it was .... keep your virginity and don't mess up your life or, lose your viriginity and don't breath a word of it to any of your friends.
