The war began as a treaty dispute between Black Hawk and the white settelers in Illinois and Michigan Territories. The Sauk, Fox and Kickapoo Indians were led by Black Hawk while the Illinois Miloitia, the Potawatomi, Ho-Chunk and Menonominee Indians were led by Major Isaiah Stillman. The main cause of the treaty disputes were that the treaties were not condoned by the full tribal counsels of the tribes nor did those treaty signers have the authority to sign the treaties and give up the lands. Consequences of the war were like most plains wars at the time in that the military elite used these conflicts to boost political careers; 7 US Senators, 6 governors, and 1 president (A. Lincoln) were involved in the conflicts. The Indians of course were slaughtered, lost the land from the original invalid treaties, and the new treaty promises were broken not long after they were signed.
how was chief black hawk....WHAT? you didn't finish your question. There were more then a few Black hawks. So please be more specific. Believe me ..as a native person i run into more Bears , wolves, hawks and eagles, these days then you can imagine. and to think "CIVILIZATION" of us red savages and the taming of our wild land almost caused the extinction of these magnificent relatives, but they survived. And it's a good thing to have Bear and wolf and the winged medicine as part of who you are. Just means there are alot of powerfully strong people in the Native community, and we need them, if we are going to remember who we really are, and who we are not. So who ever you are .....keep asking. For without questions there are no answers iatbc soij

The Black Hawk War was the result of disgruntled Sauk and Fox Native Tribes under Chief Black Hawk. Five hundred warriors and about 1,500 women and children moved into northern Illinois to grow corn. The US government had settled them west of the Mississippi River and the land was not fertile. Regular US Army troops and Illinois militias, formed a force to push them back over the Mississippi. For all practical purposes, the war was over within a short time.
