The first conflict of the Cold War was the Greek Civil War which began in 1944 following the German withdrawal from Greece. Pro-Western Greeks and Communist Greeks struggled for control of the country and were still fighting when the Cold War began.
The first serious crisis was the Korean War (1950-1953); no one knew if and when the war would go nuclear. The USSR got the A-bomb in '49, Korea erupted in '50,so it was just a question of...would someone use the weapon...and who would use it first?
The first inkling that our WW II ally, the USSR could not be trusted, came in 1944 when the Russians divided Germany, kept troops in Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania and Poland.
