The Spanish Conquistadors came for treasure, adventure, and to spread (Roman Catholic) Christianity, or as it has been phrased; gold, glory, and God. Others came for the same reasons or for different reasons. Some came for economic reasons to make a better life in the New World, and some came for religious reasons to escape persecution in Europe. It would be the same if earth colonized other planets, and different people would become colonists for different reasons. The European countries saw the potential of American colonies, and colonies elsewhere in the world, as a money-maker, but otherwise Europe went about its business. The colonies were also good places to send some of their overpopulation, especially people who were not wanted; the poor, those convicted of crimes, and religious separatists.
