Many were routinely offered uppers or amphetamines. It could have been quinine, or even salt tablets, depending on the year. They were called-"daily-dailies" and they were anti-malarial pills. Some soldiers and Marines purposely would not take them in the belief that malaria was preferable to death or maiming.
