Most of the Hungarian immigrants in the US moved there before the world wars, and the second great wave was around 1956, when (because Russia invaded the country and made a communist dictature) a freedom fight took place. Hungary desperately waited for help from better wealth countries like the US for example, but everyone was so busy with the Panama-channel problem in '56. This was the last big motivation for natives to try and escape the communist block, and make a living in a democracy. Read about 1956 on wikipedia, if it has an English article about Hungary.
The majority of Hungarians immigrated during World War II, when part of Europe was invaded. Depending on when they immigrated, the Hungarians were likely either fleeing Hitler and the Nazis or Communists.
The Hungarian Uprising took place because the Hungarians were clearly dissatisfied with Soviet rule (Cominform imposed an oppressive regime on Hungary):
-Hungarian land was redistributed to other Easter European countries.
-Hungarian coal, oil and wheat were shipped to Russia while Hungarian citizens were deprived of food.
-Non-communist political parties were abolished.
-Russian officials controlled the government, the police and the army.
-Cominform began a reign of terror, executing popular political leaders and their supporters.
-Matyas Rakosi was appointed as Hungary's 'dictator'
Hope this helps :)
All the Hungarians did not immigrate to America. Some of us like it where we are:) However historically many did it for different reasons. For example there was a rise of Hungarian Jewish Immigration as the Jews tried to escape persecution in Hungary during World War II. Another reason for the general population was because of all the turmoil throughout the empire. Hungary is situated in the middle of Eastern Europe, exposed to all of the blasts of World War I and II, because of Germany and neighboring countries. Hungarians have never done particularly well in wars, so the promise of two huge wars with possibly devastating effects does not come well to most Hungarians. An old Hungarian saying says "temetni tudunk" which is close in meaning to "how to bury people -- that is one thing we know."
