Desire for cheap raw materials and expanded markets was a major reason and cause for European Imperialism. This Imperialism became a more sophisticated manner to gain a military and economic advantage to the European powers amongst themselves. The imperialism resulted prior to and after the 1800's. Generally termed colonialism, it placed Great Britain as the foremost world power. As it was said, The Sun Never Sets on the British Empire. This advantage however was not set in stone as Napoleon controlled most of Europe before his ultimate defeat at Waterloo.
One specific cause of imperialism (and colonialism) in the late 1800s was the continuing need (whether perceived or real) of industrialized Western nations to secure resource- and trade-relevant possessions throughout the world, including the 'coaling' (and general resupply) stations needed for international seafaring activity. Another specific cause was the entrance of new players in international affairs; for example, with recently reunified Germany and Italy both seeking to gain their 'place in the sun' alongside leading imperial/colonial powers in Europe.
