During the US Civil War, both the Union and Confederate armies had the same names for their respective army units. This was to be expected as the only US Military Academy at that time was at West Point and the top military officers for both sides had the same military education. Listed below are the standard military units for both sides. It should be mentioned that the size of these units varied to a degree based on avalable men during the war. The unites are listed from the smallest to the largest.
A. Regiment. 1,000 to 1,200 men;
B. Brigade. 4 to 5 regiments plus one artillary battery;
C. Division. 4 to 6 Brigades;
D. Corps. 2 or more Divisions; and
E. Army. A variable number of Corps.
Parliamentarians (Roundheads) and Royalists (Cavaliers).
They were called legions, with six to ten thousand men, the equivalent of a division in a modern army.

Combat Basic Load for the M16 and M4 is 210 rounds. As the M4A1 is typically issued only to select units (Army Rangers, AF Para Rescue, etc.), personnel assigned this weapon would be likely to carry more than the basic load.

The basic term for a roman soldier was the Numerii. Beyond that, the basic unit was, during the largest period of time, the Hoplite.

Blacks had been serving in the US Army since the Civil War, but always in racially segregated units. As President, Harry S. Truman desegregated the Army by executive order, and thereafter blacks and whites served in units together.
Within the large parameters of the Confederate military, there were any number of names given to large armies in the US Civil War. For example, two large Southern armies were the Army of Northern Virginia and the Army of Tennessee.
The Union army created African American units to fight in the civil war. Before that slaves would join the Union units that came into their area to find freedom from the plantations.
