The Gracchus brothers were trying to limit the amount of land someone could own, and give public land to the poor. They did not succeed, but set a dangerous example for politicians in the future. Both were eventually killed (Tiberius was beaten to death with chairs, Gaius was forced to commit suicide).

The big reforms desired by the Gracchii were land reforms. Most of the public lands in Italy had been taken over by the wealthy, consequently crowding out the small farmer. Both Tiberius and Gaius tried to change this situation. Gaius also went after political corruption.

Tiberius Gracchus passed a law which provided for the redistribution of land to poor peasants and the landless poor. Despite a law which prohibited anyone from owning more than a certain amount of land, large landowners took advantage of the misfortunes of many small peasants to buy their land on the cheap. They used slave labour to work their expanding estates. Many of these dispossessed people moved to Rome to eke out a living and lived in abject poverty. Tiberius tried to redress this situation. He was lynched by a mob hired by the aristocrats in 133 BC

Gaius Gracchus revived and broadened Tiberius' land reform. He wanted to redistribute larger plots of land so that labourers could be hired on them. He ordered the construction of a system of secondary roads to facilitate rural trade. He created a grain dole which distributed grain to the poor at subsidised prices. He passed a law which provided for the state to pay for the clothes and equipment of the soldiers without deducting this from their pay. He also wanted to improve the citizenship status of non-Roman Italians. Gaius' supporters were lynched and he committed suicide in 121 BC.

Tiberius Gracchus passed an agrarian law which provided for land redistribution for the poor. Many dispossessed peasants who lost the land flocked to Rome to eke out a living there and swelled the masses of the poor. Tiberius wanted to give land to these poor people so that they could set up a farm.

Gaius Gracchus wanted to revive his brother's reform which had stalled after the murder of Tiberius. He also wanted to grant Roman citizenship to the Italian peoples who were allies of Rome.

Why is Tiberius Gracchus important to the study of the Roman Empire?

Tiberius Gracchus(and his brother Gaius ten year later) led a struggle to address the plight of the poor. The Gracchi brothers were seen by some modern socialist to have been the first socialists in history. Tiberius Graccus tried implement a land reform that would redistribute land form the large landed estates of the patricians to address the economic plight of the poor. Peasants were being pushed off their farms by rich landowners who expanded their estates using slave labour. They migrated to Rome and lived in abject poverty due to a scarcity of work. They often had to rely on hand-outs by the by the rich by becoming their clients. The brothers tried to address this poverty by redistributing land to the displaced peasants. Tiberius was elected plebeian tribune in 133 BC. He pressed for a land reform by using an old law that limited the amount of land that could be owned any individual. He used another law to establish a commission to oversee the redistribution of land which was made up of himself, his brother Gaius and his father-in-law. The senators, even the liberal ones opposed this as were worried that their lands would be confiscated. They got other tribunes to oppose the reforms. Tiberius then appealed to the people. The senators threatened to prosecute Tiberius after the end of his term. Thus Tiberius stood for re-election. The senators obstructed this. Then several of them attacked him with the help of hired thugs. Tiberius and some 300 of his supporters clubbed to death.

Why did Tiberius set up farms for the poor Romans?

I guess that you are referring to Tiberius Gracchus, not Tiberius the emperor. He did not actually set up farms for the poor. He instituted an agrarian reform which redistributed land to the poor. Many of the poor in Rome were dispossessed peasants who had lost their farms and had migrated to Rome to eke out a living there. The plots of land which the state allocated to peasants were usually too small to sustain a family. Indebtedness was also a problem for many peasants. The owners of large landed estates took advantage of distressed peasants to buy land on the cheap and expand their estates, which were worked by slave labour. The implementation of this land reform proved difficult. Tiberius Gracchus was not the only one who attempted land reforms. His brother Gaius and several other politicians tried this, too. In the end it was Julius Caesar who was successful in implementing his land reform.

How did Tiberius Gracchus policies attack the Senate Patrician class?

By his proposal for agrarian reforms that would (among other things) limit the amount of acreage any citizen might posess. This would have been a blow to the the large (often Patrician) landowners, many of whom held seats in the Roman Senate. The resulting conflict with the Senate finally led to Tiberius Gracchus being killed by his political enemies. His land reforms however were finally implemented under popular pressure.

Tiberius Julius Caesar Augustus, Emperor of Rome, was killed because he was a bloodthirsty tyrant, a serial sadistic pedophile, and had ordered the execution of several high ranking and popular Roman citizens. Gaius Gracchus was killed by the Roman Senate because of a series of reforms he instituted that cost several wealthy families money and political power, which led to a minor civil war. He also claimed to be morally superior to all of his contemporaries, calling himself the "most virtuous man in Rome."
