Back in the Imperialism/colonization era, East, South, and Southeast Asia was the Middle East and spice was the oil of present day trading.

Money, in short. India was the most lucrative market in the world, and the country which controlled India controlled the right to tax all imports from other countries, or to ensure that Indians only bought British goods.
