there is too much to explain in this, but the Germans used something called blitzkieg early in the war. this means lightning war in German. they would attack with panzer divisions which were quick and powerful tanks, and they often had to wait for the infantry to catch up.

Another was used by both sides during trench warfare where a barrage of shells from large guns behind the trenches provided a cover in front of the moving infantry although this was not proven effective. This was called the rolling barrage technique.

Also another which was most frequently used was the simple shoot numerous shells at the enemy then charge after the bombardment. This was used in various cases such as the Somme.

Blitzkreig was thought up as a way of breaking a static line of defense, ie a network of trenches. It called for concentration of force at a small, specific point to break through enemy lines. Forces would pass through the break, then fan out behind the lines.

It called for very close coordination between air, infantry, and armored forces. Air forces would "soften" the areas, then armored units would achieve the breakthrough. Infantry would follow to mop up any remaining resistance.

World War 1 had a lot of trench warfare with the no mans land between the Allies' and the Axis' trenchs. Also I read that few airplanes were used, and those that were used in the military were used to fly over enemy trenchs to see whats what. They weren't jets either, and if the pilot had to fight he would throw bricks, ropes or could possibly shoot a handgun at enemy ground force or other planes.

World War One strategies were based on massed infantry attacks (Human Wave Assaults). The relatively new machine gun excelled in repelling these sorts of attacks, inflicting high casualties upon the attackers.

German, American, British, French, and Russian commanders all should have known better than to deploy such tactics, as all of those nations had official observers (military officers) present on the battlefields (and some at sea to observe naval engagements) during the Russian-Japanese War 1904-1905. And the Russians should especially have known better, as it was they that deployed the machine gun on a general scale during that 1904-1905 war.

These grossly inefficient tactics continued to be used due to the fact that most of the Generals on both sides of the conflict were used to an old-fashioned type of war, and strategy was yet to adapt to the advent of such effective weapons.

Trench warfare begun in the US Civil War extensively was used in World War One. Also battle tactics now were improved by the invention of the tank and the use of air power as well.

It depended. At the beginning of World War 1 the generals had no idea what they where up against, and sent troops in a 18th century charge at the trenches. Some countries even sent horsemen at the enemy. In any event, machine guns, rifles, and artillery took out all of these old fashioned tactics and slaughtered millions of men in the first six months of the war. (75% of all casualties in WW1 were in the first year). After a while, most of the countries started wising up. They dug more trenches, got khaki colored uniforms, and did not march in formation toward enemy entrenchments. They had new tactics such as blitzkrieg, where artillery 'walked' in front of the artillery, meaning it kept a steady stream of fire in front of the men about 50 yards ahead, so that the enemy kept their heads down as long as possible. It changed from 1860 to 1940 tactics in two years basically.

Hope this helped!
