It was the loose confederation called the Spanish Republic and an equally mixed coalition called the National Faction or more commonly, the Nationalist versus the Republicans. It began as an attempted coup d etat by the Spanish Army (Nationalists) under the leadership of Francisco Franco against the seated government (Republicans) under President Manuel Azana.

The Nationalist were supported by Fascist Italy, Nazi Germany and Portugal and American big business interests.

The Republicans drew support from the Soviet Union, International Brigades, Carlists and Mexico. The US was officially neutral but there were over two thousand US men who served in the International Brigades.

Over 300,000 died in this struggle which is often seen as a testing ground for WW2 equipment and tactics, as well as an idealism struggle between Fascism and Communism.
