They started missions, villages, ranches, towns. San Diego and most of the cities in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas were started and settled by the Spanish and Mexican people groups.

Three types would probably be:

1. Missions/churches, such as those started up by Junipero Serra;

2. Military camps, or presidios; and

3. Trading posts, villages, and other civilian gatherings.

The City of San Francisco came about as a combination of all three. The village of Hierba Buena grewend encompassed the sight of the original presidio and also the mission of Saint Francis (called San Francisco in Spanish).

These were not actually "in the US" at the time, because the United States of America came later.

The three kinds of settlements that Spain establish with Americans to be exact are the Pueblos, Missions and Presidio. The function for this three agreements are Pueblos for the residents, Missions are for Religious sectors and Presidios for Military use.
