Nothing. Sugar is not able to dissolve in petrol fuel and thus nothing will happen to the engine. If the day keeps getting hotter and hotter and you run most of the gasoline out of your tank and then refill the tank, you may not have a problem. The Mythbusters team from Discovery Channel did a test on this and found that there was no engine troubles when sugar was added to the fuel in the fuel tanks, at least not initially, but it can clog the fuel system and ruin the fuel pump over time.

As it turns out, sugar doesn't dissolve in gasoline. Pouring sand into the gas tank would have about the same effect as pouring in sugar initially. However, when things start to cool off, the sugar can get sticky. It can start gumming up the works. You may need to clean out the gas tank, replace the hoses, and clean out the fuel system and the injectors. It can be a real mess. It can get expensive.

What if you put sugar in the gas tank?

Sugar in the gas tank will not cause the engine to fail because sugar does not dissolve in gas. It will get pulled thru the gas line and into the fuel filter(s) and depending on how much sugar is in the tank, will plug the fuel filter sooner or later. This will cause the car to stall or not stay running. You can either replace the fuel filters until the sugar is gone or get the car to a mechanic and have the gas tank removed and flushed out. This is not a do-it-yourself project. You could also drive the car to the mechanic and then have the fuel filter replaced while they are flushing the gas tank.

What to do if sugar is in tank?

If you suspect that someone put sugar in the tank of your car, the best thing to do is to make an appointment to have your filters cleaned at a garage. Sugar in the tank will not disable your car, this is a common myth, but like pouring sand into someone's gas tank, it might cause your filters to need cleaning earlier.

Is car any good after sugar is put in gas tank?

If the vehicle has fuel injectors, then when the sugar-diluted gas is pumped to those injectors, it can plug, stick, and foul them. Sugar does not dissolve in gasoline, it lays in the bottom of the fuel tank like sand unless there is water involved.
