2002 Pontiac Montana, 165,000 miles. I am the only owner. Very reliable service. Front wheel bearings have been replaced twice. Traction System OFF light came on at 155,000 miles, and cruise control broke at same time. Lived with that, but then rear brake lights went out and mechanic cleaned out the rusted rear light circuit boards, which made everything work again. Mechanic told me that rusty circuit boards are common for Montana. Mechanic suggests replacing 2 circuit boards next time for $250.
The traction control system malfunction light is a warning light that indicates the tires are losing traction on the road. If driving in adverse weather when the light comes on slowing down will make it go out.

For Chargers: -If it just flashes a couple of times and goes away, it was on because you lost traction in at least one wheel -If it comes on and stays lit for three 'trips,' then there was an anomoly in your traction control system that has not come back -If it comes on and doesn't go away after three 'trips,' then there is a problem with your traction control system and you should go to a Dealership ASAP.

When the speedometer stops working and the ABS or traction disabled light comes on in a vehicle it indicates that the vehicle's ABS system is faulty. This could be indicative of a faulty wheel sensor or the ABS tracking system itself.
the traction light comes on telling you there is a low traction condition, not that the system needs service. the anti-lock brake system is the noise you hear. it is a series of hydraulic pumps that is cycling the brake pressure on the locking wheel. that is also what you feel on the pedal. the system is working as it should.
This is the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) also called Traction Control. The light will come on briefly when one or more of the tires on your vehicle loose traction. It will also come on and stay on if you turn the traction control off. If the traction control is on and the light stays lit all the time, then there is a problem with the system. Seek professional help.
It means one or more of the cars tire's has lost grip with the road and traction control is kicking in.
