Supervisors do not work at WikiAnswers as their career, it is a privilege that they have gained, for several reasons. Any contributor can become a Supervisor, this is true, but, it takes somebody with talent, who is intelligent, open-minded, and ready to do more on WikiAnswers, to become a Supervisor. Contributors wishing to become Supervisors can either send an email to WikiAnswers, or let an existing Supervisor/Mentor know, and they may help you to become a Supervisor. Being a Supervisor works the same way as a Contributor, you don't go to an office to work, you don't get paid, you can use WikiAnswers at your leisure, the only difference between a Contributor and a Supervisor, is the power, and the extra abilities Supervisors have.
Supervisors are just like contributors who login from their personal PCs and use the website. The website does not provide any specific facilities for supervisors to logon to the site. However, there are extra tools available on the menus. Supervisors participate out of their own interest towards the site.
One fast track to becoming a supervisor is The Initiates Program (TIP). Other programs like SPA (Special Project Assistants) will help get you there, but they may take longer. Once you are a supervisor, there are promotion pathways. Everyone starts as a probationary floating supervisor. Once you finish the required mentoring after becoming a supervisor, you will be a regular floating supervisor, unless you pick up one or more categories to supervise and become a category supervisor. Category supervisors gain an additional tool for everywhere, and other tools for the categories they supervise. So you don't lose the ability to be a floating supervisor when you become a category supervisor. There are also advanced category supervisors. You may have the opportunity to become a senior supervisor, but you have to be a category supervisor first. There are also advanced senior supervisors.
Then there are 2 other ranks that volunteer supervisors will be unable obtain since they are only for Community Assistants, and they are paid employees. Functionally, they are like Advanced Senior Supervisors, but with more tools. (I may be wrong in all this because I am not a CA.) There are "minor" CAs and "major" CAs. The minor CAs may be people like interns for Answers, Accountants, bookkeepers, technicians, etc. The major CAs would be those who have significant authority and are directly involved with site. From what I understand, there are about 8 different ranks, with 6 of those being open for most who are willing to work their way through the ranks.
