There are lots more moving parts that can whine under the hood besides the Power Steering. There's the water pump, the oil pump, any number of rubber belts, the alternator can also whine, as can the air conditioner pump. Could be the bearings in any of those devices too ... with the engine running, take a wooden broomstick (with the broom removed) and put one end on each part and put your ear to the other end. This lets you hear exactly what is going on inside those engine parts.
sounds like a bad power steering pump
The kids in the back.
yes it will.
Check the power steering pump for the cause of the noise. I sounds like the pump is causing the whining and is either low on fluid or possibly going bad.
Usually a bad bearing or loose belt.
Steering fluid leak.
Whining noises often come from the alternator or the steering pump. Check the power steering fluid in the pump (there is a dipstick on the pump), and have an AVR test done on the alternator. If the alternator is faulty, you are probably having battery problems as well. If the steering pump is low on fluid or is faulty, you probably are experiencing jerky steering from time to time.
If the sound is a loud growling , whining, noise you're probably low on power steering fluid. Now the cause of the fluids loss is WHERE ?
whining sound when turning the steering wheel, in either direction, means that the power steering fluid is low and/or possibly the power steering pump is going bad.
Pebble caught between rotor and disc pad?
Possible its time to change those brake pads out. The whining noise is possibly the metal grinding to your rotor, which would cause your wheel to shake. Consider getting those rotors turned as well.
Yes, if the belt slips.
