i need a year on this one.......there are different reasons for different systems.if it has a "check engine" light on though, have that fixed first!
AnswerIt could be a crack or hole in the air intake hose. Look in between the MAF and the throttle body. When there is a tear in the hose, the MAF gets all out of whack and will start when the motor is cold, but will die when it gets warm. Another symptom is if the motor is warm and you try to start it, it will start fine, but will not idle and will die very quickly. If you do find a tear or hole, all it takes to repair it is some electrical tape to seal the hole.=It took me almost a year to figure this one out! And not one mechanic could help me.My 1990 4runner would start great when cold, but after running a few miles (like going to the grocery store) when I would try to restart it, I would only get a single click from the passenger side of the engine compartment. I went over the entire starting circuit. Main areas to look are- ignition switch, neutral safety switch, and the starter and selenoid on top of the starter. After replacing the starter (not cheap) and a lot of frustration I found that the wire running from the battery to the main fuse box was corroded under the insulation. I slit the rubber with a razor blade, and found it corroded.I replaced it with a cheap battery ground wire (around 4 bucks) and it solved my problem.Note- You may want to get a replacement wire from Toyota, since it has a special connector attached to the fuse box. I just spliced mine where it was bad.
Bad EGR valve
bad starter, or solenoid
ign spark control modual see if when it dosnt run if you have spark if no spark start there if it has spark check the redistance on injector.
has the same problem with a 92 Pontiac bonniville with the 3800 ended up being the cam position sensorI justot work.
Possibly the sway bar bushings?
your torque converter has locked up.... it's like having a manual transmission with no clutch.
if it was cold then ur engine wasnt warmed up that is one reason. or it was to hot out and ur radiator isn't working properly and it overheate. did it start after a while??
check for tune-up. chack mass air flow meter.
COULD BE THE AXLE OR THE WHEEL BEARING
Check your ignition coil. Had the exact same problem. When it was cold, ran great. As soon as it warmed up would die just like someone turned off the key.
My 92 PA had a similar problem. Either the cam or crank sensor can cause this problem. If it is the fault, the error code can be read out from the computer. Mine would fail after the engine warmed up but would start again later.
Check to see if you have an exhaust leak onto the starter. An overheated starter is one issue. Check the ignition timing Check that the fuel pump works when cranking engine Check for spark when cranking These can all be caused by heat.
