Worn engine parts, bad oil pump, defective oil sending unit, incorrect or bad oil filter. Make sure you use an AC/Delco filter as it is an excellent filter and is designed for your vehicle. You probably need to have an oil pressure test performed to rule out a bad oil sending unit.
Answerit could be a multitude of things # 1 heat #2 thin oil #3 weak oil pressure reliefe spring #4 cambearing,s wearing away and last but not least main bearings getting loose (but) if it were mains getting loose you would most likely hear them making noise atleast upon start up and especialy when HOT . is it a gas or diesel it only needs, 10 PSI at idle and a max of 30 for RPM above 1000 more oil pressure than that is not necesary in a smal block Chevy unless you are drag racing and then 35 to 40 is ample . if you are not sure of the dash gauge have some one install a mechanical gauge and do a propper test and then u can reference what you see on the machanical to the reading on the factory dash uniy LIKE A ROCKYes.. But it would be cheaper to just buy the whole regulator and replace it.
