What would cause the headlights and dashlights on a 1994 Ford Ranger XL to randomly go off for a 5-10 seconds and then back on. I move the lever for dimming headlights back and forth and lights go on.?

This is due to the headlight switch itself, failing. Also check wiring harness connection, where it clips into light switch. This exact situation happened on my 1988 Model Ford Ranger. After inspecting original light switch, the switch itself had one loose spade terminal connection, allowing the connection to heat up and distort the factory harness to the point where the terminal connection on the factory wiring harness(factory clip) would not hold the spade terminal correctly. The new headlight switch and some massaging and adjusting of the factory spade terminal ends will fix your problem. Good luck.......

FIRST OFF CHECK YOUR WIRES TO THE HEAD LIGHTS AND TRACE THEM BACK TO THE CAB, YOU MAY HAVE TO OPEN UP THE TAPE AND PROTECTIVE COVERING ON THE WIRES. REASON FOR DOING THIS YOU HAVE AN EXPOSED WIRE IN TURN IS HEATING UP AND OVERHEATING. I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY 91 RANGER XLT, FIND THE WIRE OR WIRES, FIND OUT WHAT GAUGE WIRE THEY ARE, CLIP THE EXPOSED AREA AT EACH END AND REPLACE WITH NEW WIRE! ALSO IF YOU HAVE FOG LAMPS THAT ARE AFTER MARKET THAT TURN ON WITH YOUR HEADLIGHTS YOU MAY BE OVERLOADING YOUR CIRCUT, RE-WIRE YOU LAMPS TO A SWITCH WITH AN INLINE FUSE, ALSO HAD THIS PROBLEM, FOUND OUT THE HARD WAY GOING DOWN THE INTERSTATE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT, GETS A LITTLE FREAKY WHEN YOU HAVE NO LIGHTS PITCH BLACK.
