What would stop it from working is a factory defect I believe which affects 2003-2005 Suburbans and Trucks. Your 05 may still be under the extended warranty GM offered for the defect. Otherwise the instrument cluster is around $300.00.
Check with a GM dealer about the problem (it's free to check) as I am not certain it affected Suburbans (it did affect "trucks"), nor am I certain how "extended" the repair offer was.

If the speedometer continues to work - probably a broken gear etc. in speedometer head and probably will have to be replaced. If speedometer does not work -- probably a broken speedometer cable
