What would cause the transmission on a 97 Tahoe to shift hard and sometimesd lose overdrive after running on the highway for more than 20 min but return to normal once you turn off the engine?

Run a diagnostic code. You probably won't be able to get to any of the transmission codes, but there may be a problem with the VSS or some internal transmission electronic controls.

With a .74 overdrive transmission and 22.5s, you'd be running between 68 and 70 at 1500 RPMs. If you're running a direct drive with a 1:1 ratio and 22.5s, you'd be running 2.79s or 2.64s. Direct drive is disadvantaged in that you end up with lower starting torque, but also has an advantage in hills in that running a 1:1 transmission ratio doesn't create a parasitic drain on the engine (whereas running in overdrive does).

It is possibly the overdrive solenoid located within the transmission. It prevents the transmission from downshifting and causes stalling at low speeds. It's a cheap part but a real hassle to change.

It should indeed stand for Electronic Controlled Transmission. It will basically make the transmission delay shifting until the engine revs higher, giving you a bit more power. There should also be a button on the gear selector itself that probably turns on and off the overdrive, as described below. Of course the problem with running your car in ECT mode, means you will be using more gas. This is either the Overdrive button or the Traction Control button. On this car, I think this stands for Electronic Controlled Transmission, which means it turns the overdrive on an off. While traveling at 50 mph push the button. Chances are you need to add transmission fluid. This needs to be checked with the engine running and at normal operating temperature. Checking the transmission level dipstick on a cold engine always gives a false reading of having enough or too much fluid in that unit.
