Alan Shepard's first flight was on May 5, 1961. It was the first spaceflight by an American. Yuri Gagarin of the USSR went into space 3 weeks before Shepard to become the first man in space.

Shepard's second flight was aboard Apollo 14. He and his crewmates, Stuart Roosa and Edgar Mitchell were launched toward the moon on January 31, 1971. On February 5, Shepard piloted the lunar module "Antares" to the most accurate landing of all the Apollo moon landings. 33 hours after landing, Shepard and Mitchell left the lunar surface. They landed in the Pacific Ocean on February 9, 1971.

Shepard was the oldest astronaut to land on the moon and the only one of the Original 7 to do so.

Shepard died on July 21, 1998. Because he was a former Navy avaitor, he requested that his ashes be scattered at sea.
