The erection of the Berlin Wall (known officially in East Germany as antifaschistische Schutzwall - antifascist barricade) began on 13 August 1961, with the closure of crossing points into the Soviet sector and the erection of barbed wire barricades.

He and the Soviet Union built the wall to keep East Germans from leaving. There many more opportunities and better living in West Germany than in East Germany. If they didn't build the wall basically they would have nobody living in East Germany.
