Well he start's to fall in love with her little by little every episode. At first he just wanted her because she looked like Katrine but as you know she refused because she loves Stefan. Well Every episode he got to know her a little more and figured out she's not Katrine and he stared to like her for who she was. He started to consider her as a friend. But he Realized that he loved her ( not in a romantic way) in the episode As I lay Dying. That episode was all about Damon.
