In the 1500's, a Roman Catholic monk named Martin Luther, a German, objected to some of the abuses of power of the Church of his day. For his questioning that authority, he was labeled a heretic and excommunicated by papal bull. Those that agreed with his reforms were pejoratively labeled "Lutherans." As a reminder of the persecution they suffered, the name was retained, while Luther himself thought it very unfitting that a Church be known by the name of anyone other than Jesus the Christ. The Lutheran Church comes out of the "conservative reformation" which means that only things that were considered unbiblical or unjust were changed to be more in keeping with the early Church. Most of the authentic traditions of the historic Church were preserved such as the liturgy (Mass) and sacramental theology. It is the largest non-Roman Catholic denomination and is the State Church of most of the Scandinavian and some Baltic countries. There are also large numbers of Lutherans in North America and Africa. Many Lutherans do not find the label "protestant" befitting of the denomination as it does not have much in common theologically or in practice with the Reformed or "Evangelical" Churches. Lutherans and Anglicans/Episcopals more closely resemble Roman Catholicism and Orthodoxy in worship and theology than they do non-historic or Calvinist denominations. The Cardinal Lutheran doctrine is one of "grace." The Lutheran Church stresses a life of faith and service to others and devotes many resources and services to humanitarian causes throughout the world.

the correct answer is PENTECOST

Lutheran is NOT a religion nor was it created by Martin Luther, A RC priest who spoke against the abuses within the Roman Catholic Church of his time. The name "Lutheran" was the N-word of its time and those who were Evangelically Reformed Roman Catholic's turned the negative impact of the name to make a Confessional stand over/against who would silence them.

Martin Luther did not "create" the Lutheran Chruch. He was Catholic (as was everyone in his time--the 1500's--in Europe). As a Catholic monk (church worker), he had access to The Bible, something the commoners did not, and because he was educated he could actually read it. Upon reading it for himself, he realized that the Catholic church had severely distorted God's Word. For example, they were saying that only people who were "good" enough would go to Heaven (clearly a violation of God's grace, which is offered to all people who believe that Jesus is God, regardless of how "good" they are). The Catholic church was also selling forgiveness, which is impossible. Forgiveness is offered freely by God to all who simply ask Him for it. It is not something that can be purchased and is not something the church can grant or withhold.

Martin Luther exposed these things (along with a number of other false teachings, which were later termed the "95 Theses") and was expelled from the Catholic church. He translated the Bible into the common language (German) and offered copies to all people, not just church workers. After he died, those who agreed with his protests (which is where the term "Protestant" comes from) of the Catholic church continued to follow the Bible rather than Catholicism, and decided to call themselves "Lutheran."
