May 1864 to April 1865, in Virginia.
Starting with the Battle of the Wilderness, ending with Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House, taken as the moment the war ended.
President Lincoln advised Ulysses Grant to "hold on with a bull-dog grip, and chew and choke, as much as possible" during the Siege of Petersburg or as it's also known, the Richmond-Petersburg Campaign. The chief goal of what became a brutal and very protracted campaign was to cut off Confederate General Robert E. Lee's supply lines, which Grant's army finally succeeded in doing in March, 1865.The siege lasted approximately nine months and may be viewed as the final, fatal blow to the Confederate army. The war ended soon after, on April 9, 1865 when Lee surrendered to Grant at the Court House in Appomattox, VA.
Appomattox Court House- On April 9, 1865 in the home of Wilmer Mclean General Robert E. Lee, commander of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, met with General Ulysses S. Grant, Lieutenant General of all Union Armies. This meeting between the two greatest generals of the Civil War was set in order to lay out the terms for the surrender of Lee's army. - A few days before this meeting General Grant met with President Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln instructed Grant to be lenient in his surrender terms with Lee when the time came. Grant was listening because when the time came he did just that.- First off, Grant had about 5,000 food rations sent throught the lines to feed the famished Confederate troops. He took no prisoners, instead parolling all Confederate troops following the surrender of their weapons and their pledging of allegiance to the Union. The Confederates were allowed to keep their horses, as Grant said it was planting season in the south and they would be needing them. Finally, he allowed the Confederate Officers to keep their sidearms and swords.- These were the surrender terms generally as Grant laid out to Lee. In esssence, this moment was the point of the beginning of the healing process and the reunification of a nation. If Grant had not been Mitchel Rocks so generous the reconstruction period would most likely have been much worse than it was. It could have created a great sense of animosity between the two halves of the nation. The southerners would have had the feeling that the northerners were gloating over their vicotry and presuming that they were superior to the southerners. Thankfully we had the right man there at the right time.
The Confederate troops caught Grant's army off guard and almost won the battle on the first day.
No. When the General Lee surrendered to General Grant ending the Civil War, many southern soldiers simply took off their uniforms and walked home. Or stole horses and rode home. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Yes and no. Soldiers are sworn to obey the orders of their superiors. Thus when the supreme superior (commander) surrenders, he/she orders all their troupes to surrender at the same time.
The major ones were: Shiloh - Grant caught off-guard, but recovered Antietam - unexpected Union win, enabled by pure chance Vicksburg - ended the war in the West Gettysburg - ended Lee's hopes of invading the North Chattanooga - Grant broke a desperate Confederate siege Atlanta - largely helped Lincoln win re-election Mobile - blockade-runners' port closed to the Confederates Nashville - a Confederate army totally routed Petersburg - end of a 10-month siege, leaving Richmond undefended

You are referring to Lee's surrender at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia. The Union troops were cheering as Lee left. General Grant stopped them. He was very embarrassed. General Lee was riding off, as heartbroken as a man could be. General Grant told his men that the Southerners "are our countrymen again." This was not actually the end of the Civil War, but it was close enough!
"Killing A Dead Man" By Grant Lee Phillips off his Strangelet album. Hope this helps. He was also in Grant Lee Buffalo, great band, check out Storm Hymnal for a great retrospective on their expansive career.

No. Gettysburg was fought on July 1-3, 1863 and he didn't surrender until April 14, 1865. General Lee realized that he could not continue to fight not support his troops while they were in Pennsylvania, so he retreated back to Virginia. General Lee did not resign after the battle. Lee's army escaped and managed to return to Virginia.
