check the oil. if its leaking your head gasket may be bad. if theres oil on the engine around the head gaskets you know its leaking. ADD OIL

Answercheck the throttle sensor, or catylic converter AnswerThis sounds like a bearing problem ! Lets start at the beginning , has your head gasket been replaced, does your oil look milky? the neon is notorious for headgasket failure if there's water is in your oil it will not hold the proper viscosity to keep your engine from rattling! Now back to where I started the bearings could be wore or possibly the oil pump , allowing the bleed down of oil when parked, this in turn allows the engine to make noise when started because the oil is not where it should be to take up the gaps ! Good Luck ! AnswerI've had similar symptoms (clicking noise - sometimes quite loud) from sticky fuel injectors in two different Neons ('95 SOHC and '99 DOHC). Eventually, the offending injector in the '95 failed and had to be replaced. The '99 has been doing this to varying degrees for the past few years. I periodically dump a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank, and that seems to lessen the noise for a while. AnswerYou have self adjusting valves. What your hearing are the lifters and everything getting oil sent to them and getting all situated in those few seconds. Especially if your oil looks and smells clean and you aren't losing any; I wouldn't be all that concerned. Neons are notorious for problems in general. i.e. rear main seal, tranny lines (auto) head gasket to name a few that, if you don't stay on top of it, you'll deal with at some point in time.

For SOHC engines, if your not sure whether your head gasket has been changed the updated head gaskets have a square tab with a hole in the center that extends between the #1 and #2 cylinders. So you shoud see the tab as your facing the engine from the front of the car looking down into the engine bay. #1 cylinder is on your left you should see the tab between the 1 and 2 cylinders.
