Historians generally agree on the year 1961.
No. President Kennedy sent advisors to South Vietnam, not Korea. Vietnam was the slow-growing cancer that allowed advisers to become involved. JFK sent the SEALS and Green Berets to Southeast Asia (Vietnam). JFK authorized the "Green Beret" for the US Special Forces. The SEALS were converted UDT men (Under Water Demolition men, aka Frogmen); they too were converted to SEALS on JFK's watch.

Both are to blame , but the major blame is on John Kennedy.
He created special warfare units...or at least gave them priority in future military involvement; the Green Beret and the SEALs.

This is a very special award. JFK authorized the Green Beret in 1961. Approximately 85 men have been inducted into the US Army Special Forces Green Beret Hall of Fame as of summer 2012.

JFK
The Vietnam War.
President Kennedy sent additional US Advisers & Special Forces (Green Berets) to Vietnam in 1961 up thru 1962. Regular US combat troops did not arrive (officially) until 1965 under President Johnson. Since JFK had troops covertly already arriving in Vietnam by March or April of 1961, he must have ordered them about on his inauguration day of Jan.20, 1961, since it takes a month or two at best/quickest for that to happen...

Yes, I completed the Special Forces course in 1976 following Vietnam 1969-70, and was awarded the Special Forces 5G Additional Skill Identifier. In 1984, after its creation, I was awarded the Special Forces Tab by the JFK Special Warfare Center. Although I was a Military Intelligence Branch officer at the time, my formal regimental affiliation has always been with the 1st Special Forces Regiment. - Michael A. Aquino, LTC, PSYOP, USA-Ret.
