James Cook was an English navigator and in 1768-71 commanded the Endeavour sailing from Yorkshire. He circumnavigated and charted New Zealand, the east coast of Australia and New Guinea and taken possession of them for England. The voyage was completed through Java and the Cape of Good Hope. He also discovered how far Antarctic stretched northward. He visited Tahiti and New Hebrides and discovered New Caledonia. In January of 1779 he discovered Hawaii and was killed by the natives on the island. He did more than any other navigator to add to the knowledge of the Pacific and Southern Ocean.
