Because the Nation of Islam was racist. The Nation of Islam thought that white people were the devil. When Malcolm X went to Mecca (pilgrimage), he realized that white, black, everyone could be Muslims. Malcolm X left the Nation of Islam after finding out that Elijah Muhammad had been going against his own teachings and having multiple affairs with women within the Nation of Islam, and had children by them. He had been suspended from the organization after making controversial remarks regarding the death of John F. Kennedy. He converted to Islam because he traveled to Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj and came to realize that the Nation of Islam wasn't Islam at all. The Nation of Islam used to teach its members that Blacks were special people from God and that Whites were devils. So when he went to perform Hajj, he saw all kinds of people gathered together (Arabs, Blacks, Whites, Chinese, etc...) all wearing the same clothes and praying together, so Allah (God) guided him to realize that the real Islam isn't what the Nation of Islam taught him. This is the real Islam. So he converted to Islam. May Allah have mercy on his soul.
