James Cook was not yet a captain when he embarked on his first voyage in 1768. He arrived in Tahiti on 13 April 1769. Following this, he continued west, reaching New Zealand in October 1769. He arrived at the southeast corner of Australia in April 1770. He returned to England in 1771, having circumnavigated the globe, as well as exploring and charting New Zealand and the east coast of Australia.

There was no King Edward to be told about Australia. Through the lifetime of James Cook, the monarchs of Great Britain were named George. Cook was born during the reign of George I. Most of Cook's naval service, and all his Pacific expeditions, were during the reign of George III.

On James Cook's second journey which lasted from 1772-1775, he commanded the 'Resolution' and the 'Adventure' on an expedition to the South Pacific, in order to either prove or disprove the rumour of a great southern continent.
Captain James Cook did not actually find any countries. He was the first to chart the eastern coast of Australia, and he was the first to circumnavigate New Zealand. However, he did not find either of these countries. He was the first European to come across Hawaii, which he called the Sandwich Islands, but they do not constitute a "country".

He did not actually go to the South Pole, but on his second voyage, he crossed the Antarctic Circle and reached a latitude of 67 degrees 15 minutes S, the first to sail that far south. Captain Cook was killed by Hawaiian natives in 1779.

James Cook made three major journeys. Cook's first voyage extended from August 1768 to July 1771. His second voyage was from July 1772 to July 1775. The third voyage was July 1776 until Cook's untimely death in February 1779.
