Most likely pottery started in Japan where they would take clay and make bowls and plates out of it and decorate them in blue and white and then sell them. Either that or it was a Native American tradition to make pottery to put things in and to eat off of.

This 'firing', as it is called, causes changes to the structure of the clay so that water will no longer soften it.
