D-Day was a day, not a battle. It was the day (June 6, 1944) that Canada, U.S. and Britain launched the invasion of Normandy. After that day, until the final German surrender on May 8, 1945, Allied forces were in continuous combat with the Germans.
D-Day started and ended on 6 June 1944 the war however did not end until 7 May 1945. The end of the Normandy invasion was considered a point where they Allies could move enough troops into the battle to ensure that they could begin to push the German army back. The Falaise Gap was considered the final obstacle that turned the tide of the campaign. The Falaise Gap battle began on August 8 and called the Allies to launch a "short hook" to encircle German forces. General Patton moved through Normandy via Le Mans, and then back north again towards Alençon. The Germans were caught in a pocket near Chambois. On August 21, the Allies closed the gap and captured 50,000 German troops.

D DAY was the day the allies went to recapture france the battle following Dieppe In World War 2 in comparisson to WW1 in a sense dieppe was like the battle of the sommes and dday was like the battle of vimy ridge. Dieppe was a failure and the lessons learned lead to the success of Dday. Dday played an important part in the allies fate because the allies recaptured france who had fell to russia only 6 weeks into war. this marked the last battle in europe in ww2.
