Conservation of the environment is a hot topic now: we worry about global warming, shrinking rainforests, extinction of exotic plants and animals, disappearing frontiers and foliage. The subject didn't just arise recently, however. In the US, for example, artists and writers in the nineteenth century were already singing the praises of nature and opining the encroaching settlement of wide-open spaces. Long before early conservationists like Henry David Thoreau and John Muir, John Chapman, aka Johnny Appleseed, wandered from Pennsylvania through Ohio and Indiana, planting nurseries of flowers and fruit trees, and nurturing orchards. Chapman, who was born September 26, 1774, sold and gave away thousands of saplings and apple seeds to families migrating westward.
In 1895, the Connecticut Forest Association was formed. Connecticut became the nation's leader of the conservation movement when it was the first state in the US to appoint a state forester after the Connecticut Forest Association pushed the General Assembly in 1901 into creating legislation that took the state into action in this conservation. It was also the first state to use state money to buy land to be used for state forests. This organization is now known as the Connecticut Forest and Park Association and continues to provide conservation education, forest stewardship, grassroots (or should I say "treeroots"?) political action, as well as providing maintenance over 700 miles of hiking trails.

Human migration, in big enough numbers, puts pressure on the environment. Humans generally pollute the environment in many ways, even when they try not to. Sewage, road-building, tree-felling and air-pollution are just a few of the effects.
