It never really did, it just changed. It was a trade route (not really a road) across Asia that was used to deliver goods from the East. By the time the goods got to the West the prices were inflated hundreds of times. Eventually, the Portugese found a maritime route around Africa and got the goods basically first hand and changed the road that way. Colombus tried to go straight around the world to make a route although something blocked his path. Anyhoo, the rest is history--we're trading all over the place.

The Silk road was never destroyed. the last famous person to travel this road was Marco polo on his exploration of Mongol china in the 1200s. but it is fare to say that the 1200s the silk road was past its hey day. the 700's and 800s AD were probably coinsidered to be the heyday of this imporartant trading network. although the first use of this road was in the Roman Empire days of about 100 AD but after the Caravel ship was invented in the 1300s the Silk road fell into the most dis-use in all its centuries. its not like it was ever a highly organized road. it was not paved or marked with mile markers or anything like you would find with the Appian way . the silk road is what historians call this informal land contacts between european cultures and the chinese cultures over 1200 years from 100 to 1300 AD
