solid is one piece, and when one tire goes up, the other must go down, and independent is each individual tire is its own piece/section, and contrary to solid suspension, any of the tires can go up and down, without one having to go up if one is down. I hope that makes sense.

i was told from a mechanic friend of mine that they go every 3 or 4 years. My 2001 Navigator's previous owner took the air suspension out of the rear and replaced it with coil springs. Its a very truck like ride now, you feel every bump.

Not really. There's no hinge for it, and no place for the suspension to go. You'd basically have to cut the bike apart to create the hinge to allow the suspension to move, and then you'd have to build the attachment points for the suspension. It's really not worth the huge effort it'd take.

Rear end is out of alignment. Have a 4 wheel alignment performed. If the tires are leaning inward on the bottom they should wear on the outside of the tire. This is positive camber. If the tire is leaning in at top and out at the bottom it is called negative camber. Independent rear wheel suspensions can make differences in camber visible for several reasons. Extra weight will cause most independent rear suspensions to squat forcing the tires out at the bottom ( temporary negative camber ) Early VW Bugs and buses had a suspensions that moved from 0 camber(wheel straight up and down to positive camber (rear wheels moved closer to one another at the bottom) The late 60s VW (68 on) had rear suspensions that went from straight up and down to wheels that were further apart at the bottom (Negative Camber). Weak or worn out rear suspension components such as springs can cause unwanted camber settings. Perhaps a problem with the front caused the tire wear that became visible when fires were rotated . It is quite possible to have the correct camber settings but because of a faulty suspension the alignment specifications become irrelevant.

Town cars have an air suspension system. There are air bags on the rear axle instead of springs. There are a lot of things that can go wrong: Leaks in the bags or lines. Pump not working. Fuses blown. Google "check air suspension". You can also buy a conversion kit that replaces it all with springs designed just for that. I paid $115 on eBay and am glad to be done with the air suspension.
