According to the historians, yoga was invented more than 5000 years ago.
According to the ancient scriptures of India such as Vedas, Upanishads and Bhagavad Gita, yoga has been a part and parcel of the lives of the sages, hermits and even common people who were considered to be the practitioners of Sanathana Dharma from time immemorial.
The origins of Yoga predate recorded history. Yoga is an ancient spiritual tradition of God-Communion. Because we have our origins in God it can be said that yoga, in its broadest sense, has always been. However, from a human perspective, our conception of yoga is bound to the realm of finite begininnings in which we find those methods to such realization.
From the infinite came this most ancient tradition. In the process of involution, referred to as the great outbreathing of God, we became apparently individualised particles of the infinite intelligence. Now, from this great outbreathing we must reascend to our heavely father by transmuting all matter and mind to the highest possible level to become conscious Gods. This transmutation of base matter into the gold of spirituality is termed the great Inbreathing of God, and consitutes the actual process of Yoga, itself.
Through involution yoga became, for a time, manifest in its positive phase - the process was Creation as we know it. Now, we are living in the negative polarity phase of yoga in which all creation will become transmuted into something higher, through successive stages of spiritual unfoldment and realization of this inherent potential of infinite Godness or goodness!
Now, just as Creation itself has infinite variety so too does the yoga manifest itself in many forms of specialisation, although the greatest part of yoga is a changeless principle which exists behind all names and forms.
If we were to study the many different forms or branches of yoga we would be able to find specific founders or points of origin of these many branches as they have come from the main trunk of universality. But I will leave that for another question!

What is yoga? Yoga is living in union with the Divine. βIn unionβ means ever connected, not as a body and mind, but as the Divine Soul. Therefore yoga is consciousness, consciousness of being the observer, the witness of the mind. What is a yoga mantra? Any mantra that can help us to transcend the body, mind and ego can be a yoga mantra. A true Yogi, if he is doing yoga, lives in the cycle of Karma Yoga - Action, Bhakti Yoga - Devotion, Gyana Yoga - Education, Dhyana Yoga - Meditation. A true Yogi is in constant yoga, and whatever yoga mantra he uses, it hardly matters, provided he is in yoga or union.
