When doing an oil change on a 98 Toyota tacoma and removing the oil filter causes a lot of oil to spew out all over the place how can you avoid this?

You don't. New Answer: It is unusual for oil to "spew" as you put it, but heavy leakage is normal. Make sure you allow all the oil to drain completely from the pan before removing the oil filter. The only oil that should be coming out when you remove the oil filter should be residual oil from the neck of the feeder line and from the oil in the filter itself, since the darn things are usually at an angle or upside down. Pity they can't improve the location of oil filters, huh?
