He decided he wanted to study Politics and Government, and after graduating from Columbia, he began working as a community organizer and an advocate for the poor. Having watched his mother struggle financially for much of his childhood, he had an understanding of the problems faced by lower-class and working-class people, and he wanted to enter an occupation where he could make a difference in some way. This led him to attend law school and become a civil rights attorney, and eventually it led him to enter politics.
