When it is cold outside and your car makes a tick-click noise as you accelerate is this something that should be fixed?

well it depends on how long has it been since the nosie started and what damage it may have caused.
normally that ticking noise is cause by the lifters not lubricating properly.is also caused by low or contaminated oil.this is not a big problem but it needs to be looked at if it continues, just to prevent damage to the engine.
is normal wear and tear on any vehicle. that is why they have diffrent types of oil in the market. when the vehicle is new you may use a 10/30 but as the years and miles go by 10/30 is not enough to cover the wear in the engine and you have the choise of replacing the worn part or simply changing to a thicker oil.there are also additives that you can add to the oil to create a thicker more cushioning base but is all a matter of choise.(if you got an autozone or any autoparts store near by ask them to show you an additive called "lucas"for engines and you make your decision)
many people will tell you don't change your oil but they have to concider that parts do wear and need that extra cushioning that a thicker oil can provide.
AnswerYour oil is thicker due to the colder temperature and isn't circulated to the entire engine as fast as it would in warmer weather. I'm assuming after the engine is warm this ticking stops. As of recent study cold idle is thought to be worse for your car as apposed to taking it easy for five minutes until the engine reaches opperating temperature.Wiki User
