There are two ways to do this.
Either way careful work is rewarded with a trouble free job.
make sure that the number 1 piston is at tdc on the compression stroke, then look and make sure the rotor is pointing at number 1. if not lift the distributor up and turn it towards the number 1 cylinder and put the number 1 wire on the cap were number 1 is, then wire it 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2 clockwise It probably means that the piston is between the exhaust and intake cycle and that you need to turn the crankcase 360 degrees. That should put the distributor in the right place.
To find where number one spark plug wire connects to the distributor, remove the distriutor cap and set number one piston at Top Dead Center (TDC). At TDC, the rotor should be pointing to where number one spark plug wire connects.
The easiest way to find it is to set #1 piston at TDC and see where the rotor is pointing, it should be pointing to number 1 terminal on the distributor cap.
Easiest way to find it is to set #1 piston at TDC and remove the distributor cap to see where the rotor is pointing. It should be pointing to #1 cylinder position in relation to the distributor cap.
once the number 1 piston is on tdc which ever point the rotor is facing becomes the number one position. if you conect the wires from there and follow your firing order you should have no problems.(i have done it)
Hopefully, you set number one piston at Top Dead Center (TDC) and made marks on the distributor in relation to its location on the engine, or at least remember the direction in which the rotor was pointing. If you didn't, then the first thing to do is set TDC and then stab the distributor. At TDC, the rotor points to the number one spark plug wire post, follow the firing order from there. While stabbing, you may have to rotate the distributor left or right a little to get the splines to mesh.

Bring number one piston on compression stroke up to TDC. Drop distributor in so that the rotor points to the number one pin inside the distributor cap. The clamp at the base of the distributor only goes one way so there is no timing with a light necessary, the ECM takes care of that.
Number one cylinder is located driver's side front of engine. With the # 1 piston at TDC on the compression stroke, the rotor will be pointing at #1 plug on cap.Number one cylinder is located driver's side front of engine. how do you set tdc on 2004 kia Rio
At TDC compression it points to the number one post on the cap.
Remove all spark plugs. Rotate engine by hand until the number one spark plug, (Passenger Side Front) is at TDC, (Top Dead Center) on the compression stroke. You can tell when it is at TDC by placing a long screwdriver in the plug hole against the top of the piston and feel when it is at the top. Go very slowly!! Once you have the piston at TDC on the compression stroke the rotor will be pointing at the # 1 plug location on the distributor cap. Rotor turns counterclockwise.
