When should the timing belt be changed on a 1994 Geo Prizm with only 47000 miles - manual says change at 60000 but belt is 11 yrs old?

With age as a consideration, I'd change it if it were mine. The engine is probably an interenrence motor on that one (most were, if not all ), and could get very expensive if it breaks.

Each vehicle is different. Refer to the owners manual for that information. If you don't have an owners manual, the dealer can certainly help you with that.

According to the Owner's Manual, it should be changed at 90,000 miles. I am still trying to find out whether it is an interference or non-interference engine. If it is a non-interference engine, the timing belt breaking won't cause engine failure.
