ARAMCO.
Not quite. It was Standard Oil of California (SOCAL) which started the negotiations for the exploration. A new entity was formed called California Arabia Standard Oil of Company (CASOC) which was granted the concession to drill oil by the late King Abdulaziz Al-Saud, the founder of modern Saudi Arabia and father to the present Saudi monarch, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud. In the mid-40's the operating company was renamed Arabia American Oil Company (ARAMCO) which was later nationalized by the Saudi Government in the early '80s.
British and American prospectors of the late 19th century. There was more to the start of WWI than just the assasination of arche Duke Franz Ferdinand; the Balkans were seen as the backwater of Europe, even under the sway of the Ottoman empire. Now the assasination was significant, because of the friction going on between the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian empire, who, in turn, were backed up by the Prussian empire to the north. The truth is, WWI was just an excuse to destroy German, Austrian and Turkish power, reason being, the pressence of those empires in mainland Europe, made it more difficult for France and Britain to rule their overseas colonies. Moreover, having discovered oil years earlier in the Arabian Peninsula and Iran, the British were looking for an excuse to topple the Ottoman Empire once and for all, that way they could have the oil for themselves.
Oil was discovered quite by accident actually; because of the increasing need for it, American and British prospectors were surveying all over the world, even "backwater hellholes" like the Arabian peninsula. BP, and I believe Aramco, in fact have their origins in the late 19th century. Of all the oil companies in the world, BP is still one of the most powerful, only Saudi-Aramco holds more power. However as a single company, as a single oil corporation, BP is the most powerful I know that much. Britain may be a small country, but do not forget that the British were everywhere once; because BP owns rights to petroleum the world over, and because its military is still a force to be reckoned with, it can hold on to its petroleum possessions relatively unchallenged.
A place where BP has lost a lot of possessions though, is the area around China; the south China sea, and the east sea, where once prospected but I believe only the south China sea, and the various island chains found there, namely the Philippines and Malaysia, had places where there was oil. Once there was a strong British pressence there but, rising Chinese military power, not to mention the fact that China never forgot the Opium war, made the British leave the region. However in parts of Africa, Latin America, and more importantly the world's oceans, BP has not lost possessions; BP I believe is the leading deep sea oil drilling corporation in the world, they have more ocean oil drilling operations than any other company in the world.
Remember that once, Great Britain was "mistress of the sea," true to that background, that is where BP gets most of its oil, and financial power from. The British Navy's job, is no longer to hold on to colonial possession; it is to ensure, Great Britain holds on to its oil rights.
