Rule of thumb is every60,000 miles. But things to check for
say once a year are; Fraying at ends, Glazing, especially the inside which can cause belt to slip (groove side), Cracks along and across the belt, Missing or separated V grooves not longer than 1/2 inch, Different depth in grooves. these checks are done of course with engine off. rotate engine a little to check another spot. To check for slippage, make mark across belt and any one pulley, a white permanent marker should be used, run engine and stop, then check that marks are still align with belt and pulley. Check belt deflection by pushing down, should be no more than 1/2 inch across 24 inch length of belt from pulley to pulley. Also check wear indicator on side of tensioner body. when belt reaches maximum wear mark, the belt should be changed.
These answers apply to v-belts also, except for when the tensior is mentioned near the end of answer.
Honda recommends replacing the cam belt every 110,000 miles.
