Aaron Burr shot Alexander Hamilton in a duel in Weehawken, New Jersey, on July 11, 1804. The bullet entered Hamilton's abdomen and ricocheted, damaging internal organs and finally lodging in his spinal column. Hamilton was immediately paralyzed from the waist down, and died the next day, July 12, 1804.
