Alvar Nunez, Cabeza de Vaca (a title, not a surname) was born about 1490, and became famous for traveling across the southwestern United States and down into Mexico to Culiacan (about 100 miles north of Mazatlan, near the west coast of Mexico) where he met up with Spanish settlers. He was known as the first white man to cross the continent and supposedly started the rumor of El Dorado.
